About the Role

Job Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mechanical HVAC/Cooling Engineer to join our team. This individual will be responsible for designing and implementing HVAC systems and fire system piping for state-of-the-art data center facilities. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of mechanical engineering principles and extensive experience in the design of cooling systems and fire protection systems tailored to the unique needs of data centers. This position will play a crucial role in ensuring the reliability, efficiency, and safety of systems that support critical infrastructure.

Responsibilities:
• Design and develop mechanical HVAC systems for data centers, ensuring they meet the specific cooling, heating, and ventilation requirements.
• Design and integrate fire protection system piping (e.g., sprinkler systems, pre-action systems, clean agent systems) into the data center layout.
• Perform detailed calculations and simulations to size HVAC and fire protection system components, determining optimal system configurations.
• Prepare mechanical system layouts, schematics, and piping designs for both HVAC and fire protection systems in compliance with industry standards and building codes.
• Select appropriate HVAC and fire protection equipment (e.g., CRAC units, chillers, cooling towers, fire pumps, sprinklers, piping networks) and manage their integration into the overall data center design.
•Collaborate with architects, electrical engineers, and project managers to develop integrated systems that ensure optimal performance and safety.
• Evaluate and recommend energy-efficient and sustainable HVAC solutions, including the integration of renewable energy sources and advanced cooling technologies (e.g., liquid cooling, free cooling).
• Perform system analyses and energy modeling to optimize energy consumption and reduce operational costs.
• Lead or assist in the preparation of technical reports, specifications, and design documentation for project bids.
• Oversee the installation and commissioning of HVAC and fire protection systems, ensuring they are completed on schedule and within budget.
• Troubleshoot and resolve design and performance issues during the construction and post-construction phases.
• Stay current with industry trends, regulatory updates, and technological advancements in HVAC, cooling, and fire protection systems for data centers.
• Ensure all work complies with local codes and regulations, including energy efficiency standards, fire safety codes, and environmental requirements.

Benefits:
• Competitive salary and performance bonuses.
• Comprehensive health benefits, including medical, dental, and vision coverage.
• Retirement savings plan with employer contributions.
• Professional development opportunities and support for continuing education.
• Flexible working arrangements.
• Collaborative and innovative work environment.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario is preferred.

  • 5+ years of experience in HVAC, cooling system, and fire protection design, with a focus on data centers.

  • Expertise in the design, implementation, and troubleshooting of HVAC systems and fire protection systems for high-density computing environments.

  • Strong knowledge of HVAC system components (e.g., chillers, air handling units, cooling towers, CRAC/CRAH units, humidifiers, and filtration systems) and fire protection system piping (e.g., wet and dry systems, pre-action systems, fire pumps, sprinkler heads).

  • Proficient with HVAC and fire protection design software and tools (e.g., Trane Trace, Carrier HAP, Revit, AutoCAD, Fluid Flow, NFPA standards).

  • Familiarity with data center cooling technologies, including precision cooling and air- and liquid-based cooling solutions.

  • Experience with energy efficiency measures and sustainable design practices in data centers.

  • Knowledge of fire safety regulations, including NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) and other local fire protection standards.

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams.

  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Skills:

  • Knowledge of LEED or other green building certifications.

  • Experience in designing systems for large-scale, mission-critical data centers.

  • Familiarity with local and international building codes and standards related to HVAC, fire protection systems, and data centers.
